SPAA Conference – Nickelodeon's Land a Pilot returns in 2008

Deadline for Applications: Friday, 24 October 2008

SPAA Conference 2008 welcomes the return of Nickelodeon's Land a Pilot initiative. Nickelodeon Australia has increased the funding offer to $25,000 towards the production of a children's television pilot. The finalists will pitch at the Conference on Thursday 13 November with the winner announced on the day at the Sheraton Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast.

Nickelodeon is looking for a series concept that appeals to the highly competitive pre-teen 10-12 year demographic. It can be animated or live action, comedy or drama, reality or game show. A program that both challenges and connects emotionally with their audience; reflecting Nickelodeon's irreverent sense of humour with a look and feel that is original and surprising.

Tropfest Screening and Seminar

Wide Angle Tasmania, Salamanca Arts Centre and TropInc. are proud to present a seminar that aims to inspire you to submit to Sony Tropfest 2009. With the help of Tasmanian film maker Jayne Montague (two times a national finalist) you will gain insight into the phenomena that is Tropfest, and get tips on how to make your film stand out. Don’t miss this great opportunity that will help inspire you on your quest to make your film as good as it can be.

Past finalist films will be screened, including Reflux, Eddie & James White 2007, Marry Me, Michelle Lehman 2008, Great White Hunters, Gary Doust 2008, Uncle Jonny, Mark Constable 2008 and Scab, Koichi Iguchi 2008.

A representative will then discuss the festivals history, entry guidelines and post festival activities followed by a Q & A session with Tropfest past finalists.

SPAA Fringe – The Voice Behind Film and TV

SPAA Fringe is an inspirational two-day film television and new media event presented by the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA).

Comprising of workshops, one-on-one sessions, panel discussions, film screenings and social networking events, this year's SPAA Fringe line-up is set to educate, connect and inspire.

The festival offers a unique opportunity for the emerging sector to spend quality time with established filmmakers and film/broadcast execs. Information sessions with industry experts will cover everything you need to know about legals, how to pitch to broadcasters, the producer/writer relationship, scheduling and budgeting, marketing, distribution and more.

SPAA is calling on anyone who is actively working to create a film or is passionate about filmmaking, including producers, directors, writers, students and SPAA Associate Members across film, television and cross media. Low budget independent film and television makers are particularly called upon.

Digital Fringe Festival

In keeping with the Fringe Festival charter Digital Fringe is accessible to emerging and established artists, particularly those working in new media. It provides access to public screens and sets up novel environments for artists to exhibit their work.

2008 Victorian and Tasmanian State Awards for Cinematography

Deadline: Friday, 17 October 2008

The Australian Cinematography Society is calling for entries from financial members for the 2008 Victorian and Tasmanian State Awards for Cinematography.

The State Awards will be held on Saturday 22 November 2008 at Melbourne Town Hall. Gold winners will progress through to the National Awards for Cinematography, and announcement of Australian Cinematographer of the year will be made at a gala function in May 2009.

Direct entry is not available into the National Awards, and all entries must first go through the relevant state judging.

Adelaide Film Festival 2009 – Call for entries

Deadline: Friday, 17 October 2008

The Adelaide Film Festival 2009 is calling for submissions of feature films, documentaries and shorts made in Australia and internationally, completed after February 2007. All genres of contemporary screen culture are welcomed including drama, documentary, experimental, new media, and animation.

The acclaimed biennial Adelaide Film Festival is one of the youngest but most dynamic and innovative film festivals in the world, with a program including special events, live performance and the premiere of films commissioned by the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund.

Crossover Australia – A national hothouse for innovation

Following on from the success of Crossover Australia 2007, the South Australian Film Corporation, and the Adelaide Film Festival are calling for applications for Crossover Australia 2009.

Crossover Australia is a creative incubator devoted to building new forms of interactivity. Bringing together Australians from a variety of disciplines who are interested in applying their practice across platforms and who want to explore interactivity across screen based media. The aim is to develop innovative interactive digital projects.

Over the course of five days, participants are immersed in a series of activities where the primary goal is the development of conceptual prototypes for groundbreaking interactive projects.

Who: The South Australian Film Corporation, and the Adelaide Film Festival in association with the Australian International Documentary Conference
When: 15th – 19th February 2009
Where: McLarens on the Lake in the McLaren Vale wine region - 40 minutes from Adelaide.

2008 Inside Film Awards

The Inside Film Awards are the people's choice awards for Australian films.

The Inside Film Awards celebrates and champions Australian film and creative talent. They are proudly claim to facilitate a unique dialogue between Australian filmmakers and their audience, support and promote Australian cinema and invigorate the national screen culture.
 
Celebrating 10 years in 2008, the Inside Film Awards celebrate the favourite films of the public across features, documentaries, animations, shorts and music videos. Winners will be announced on 13 November 2008 at the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast, with a live broadcast on SBS and delayed telecasts on SHOWTIME.

FLICKERFEST 2009

Flickerfest is Australia’s only ®Academy Award accredited Short Film festival, and its largest short film competition.

Flickerfest will screen for 10 days at Bondi Beach in January 2009 before heading off on a national tour. The Festival consists of three competitive programs - International, Australian and Documentary as well as a number of special programs and forums out of competition.

Munich International short film festival – Call for entries

Deadline: 28 February 2009

Munich International is excited to announce the call for entries for next year's short film festival, which takes place directly prior to the ‘big’ Munich Filmfest. Running from Thursday, 18 June to Wednesday, 24 June, 2009, the festival will showcase the world's ‘best’ contemporary short films each night at the tradition-steeped Gloria Filmpalast in the heart of the Bavarian capitol.

Submissions are open to non-German language films of all genres (fiction, animation, documentary, experimental, music video or other) from any nation of the world. Films must not have been shown in Bavaria at a festival, in a theatre or on television before, and must not exceed a length of 15 minutes. All non-English films must have English subtitles. The festival only screens 35mm prints.

Submissions are due by 28 February 2009, but organisers are asking for films as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the deadline.

Crossover Australia is inviting bright minds to come together and do what bright minds do – collaborate, clash, meander and mesh.

Over the course of five days, 20 participants led by Lab Director Frank Boyd and a team of international mentors are immersed in a residential laboratory where the primary goal is the development of conceptual prototypes for groundbreaking  interactive projects.

If you’re a programmer, filmmaker, digital media artist, writer, web developer, choreographer, mixed reality game developer, theatre director, composer, or are interested in applying your practice across platforms...take the leap. Participation is free but places are limited.

National Film and Sound Archive – Call for research fellowship applications

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) invites research proposals from academics, performers, artists, audiovisual industry and archive professionals to draw fresh, innovative perspectives from the national audiovisual collection.  Fellows will use the NFSA's collection to create a new sound or moving image work, a publication, an exhibit, a live audiovisual event or a combination of these and other approaches.

The Fellowships offer specially facilitated access and research into the national collection; close collaboration with NFSA curatorial and technical experts; access to the Library; modern accommodation; and a fully equipped work space provided on-site.

Applications for the Fellowships are due by 14 November 2008.

Your Club Our Island

Deadline for submissions: 30 November 2008

Your Club Our Island is offering grants to clubs and special interest groups staging events within Tasmania. On offer is funding of $40 per visitor and in order to be eligible your event must be staged between 1 May 2009 and 30 September 2009. It must additionally attract between 20 to 49 people to Tasmania, staying at least three nights in commercial accommodation.
